PROJECT: Mediary, the accessible medicine reminder for the elderly
ROLE: Research, prototype, UI, icons and interactions
DURATION: 3 weeks
Vision
As part of the subject Design Specialization B during January 2023, a team of three people worked in the research, development of a design library and finally design of an accessible medicine reminder app, meant to be used by the elderly.
Challenges
Limited time due to being only a 3 week long project
Extensive research on accessibility
Designing a library of icons and components
Checking contrast, fonts, sizes, hierarchy and consistency
The goal was to present a prototype fully accessible, complying with guidelines and consistent in design
Research
We started by looking for information about accessibility, types of dissabilities, common issues and resources that address this scenario
Guiding questions:
What is accessibility?
What type of dissabilities there are?
How can we address this topic?
How can we test compliance with accessibility?
What considerations should we take?
Can our project be used as a learning process for others as well?
Wireframe
At the beginning of my design process we created a simple flow, using other applications as reference.
What we achieved by doing this:
Have an initial flow to work on
Acknowledge other apps’ issues in accessibility
Discover other ways of wireframing
Consistency in flow and components
This is how the first low-fi iterations of wireframes came in place
User Testing
As part of the exam, we tested our prototype with professors, showing every step, options and proposed flow of the application
We tried to answer these questions:
Is the flow consistent?
Are icons recognizable?
Can people identify options and read the text?
Have we made our prototype more understandable that possible competitors?
These are the results:
Did it work?
As part of our outcome, we presented all of our process and designs as a whole
accessible color palette
design system with multiple components
custom icons designed for specific medical terms
a poster with considerations to take in accessibility
